What is so good about 4×4 forums and chat groups?
4×4 Forums are like a mobile 4×4 club, you can be at the club house when it suites you. Popular forums will have members on-line day and night. Some of the busier times on South African forums are during normal office hours.
These forums are there for all 4×4 enthusiasts, to have a chat with other likeminded people. It is possible to have a personal conversation with one or more other members without being seen by the rest of the members or even the internet public. The beauty of these 4×4 forums is you can “meet” peoplefrom all over South Africa and the world, unlike a traditional club where your exposure is limited to those in a particular geographical are only.
Due to the diversity, and the diversity within some forums, it is possible to pinpoint a particular niche, whether it is for general topic discussion or to ask a technical question. If you have a 4×4 vehicle specific question, make and model, there is a good chance it has been posted already. All you have to do is do a search, or repost on a related topic and ask, or start a new thread. Vehicle specific 4×4 forums are a wonderful forum to be a member of. If you own a Toyota Land Cruiser, your special interest is Land Cruiser and not Hi Lux or Defender. Vehicle specific questions are best asked on forums related to your brand 4×4. There are usually members on there that breathe and sleep a specific brand 4×4. It also avoids the annoying remarks of owners from the “other side of the fence”, like “another oil leaking Landy” or “you should have bought a Cruiser”.
General discussion 4×4 forums have good all-round 4×4 and camping related topics. These forums will represent closer to a traditional 4×4 club. They usually host the full spectrum of activities as encountered by the various 4WDowners. Apart from vehicle specific threads, you could find threads on: clubs, navigation as in GPS and maps, recovery, trailers and caravans, camping, general vehicle technical, tyres, training, 4×4 trails, and the always popular off topic discussions.
There is a code of conduct to follow on all forums. Treat these forums as if you are communicating face to face with a person. Most 4×4 forums are monitored by moderators, who will wrap you over the fingers when you step out of line by using crude and offensive language. In severer cases your log-in will be suspended or revoked.
To complete and round-off your membership as a 4×4 forum member, participate in a get together, when held in your area. Putting a face and a 4×4 with the forum name is good and can be like old friends that met for the first time.
